International young scientists at the chemistry department of the University of Stuttgart

The Länd - a great place for international talents

A group of young scientists from all over the world went on a discovery trip through Baden-Württemberg from 1 to 7 July 2022 following the Nobel Laureate Meetings in Lindau to learn about the German state‘s study and research opportunities in chemistry.

International collaboration and exchange are two important factors contributing to Baden-Württemberg’s academic success. In this spirit, the state inivites a selected group of young scientists and graduates after their participation at  the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings every year to travel through The Länd.

They get to know the state’s research landscape with a focus on the Lindau Meetings‘ theme as a  delegation under the guidance of the career start bw team at Baden-Württemberg International (BW_i), the state’s central location marketing agency for business and science in and for the German Southwest.

This year, 17 junior scientists, PhD students and undergraduates from 15 countries who all study and research in the field of chemistry, took a close look at what Baden-Württemberg has to offer in the field of chemistry from 1 to 7 July 2022. Besides visiting the chemistry departments and / or learning about the universities’ services and infrastructure at the state universities of Konstanz, Tübingen, Freiburg, Ulm, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Heidelberg, the delegation also learned about  the close collaboration of industry and applied science in Baden-Württemberg when stopping by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology.

Furthermore, the international researchers were able to experience the beauty and recreational opportunities of the state.

Participant voices or why Baden-Württemberg might become a future home

Alena Vdovchenko, PhD student at the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences at the Queen Mary University of London: „Although it’s not exactly the field I am studying, I noticed that the researchers at the University of Ulm were very enthusiastic which made the visit worthwile for me nevertheless. I was impressed by the University of Stuttgart’s size as well as by the equipment and research facilities they have. I love hiking and Baden-Württemberg is great for that, especially the area around Lake of Constance which is surrounded by mountains.“

María Clara Miserendino, Bachelor student in Biotechnology, College of Chemical Sciences, National University of Córdoba: „Before coming here, I had not seen myself here, but now I am planning to apply to the Master Programs which the Baden-Württemberg universities offer since I am really impressed by the manifold opportunities here. What I also liked is the close collaboration between industry and science in the state.“

Wanutcha Lorpaiboon, University of New South Wales, Australia: „My research is related to computational chemistry. The two universites that stood out for me so far, were the universities of Ulm and Stuttgart. At Ulm University for example they have their own AI cluster, so the infrastructure is there to support a computational chemist. The scenery in each city where we have been to in Baden-Württemberg is spectactular. In Tübingen I walked around and I wanted to take a picture at every spot. I particularly liked the flower bridge.“
