THE Ranking 2023: universities from the German Southwest achieve high positions

Five of Baden-Württemberg‘s nine research universities belong to the world’s best 10 percent according to the prestigious World University Rankings by Times Higher Education (THE).

The British magazine THE has ranked almost 1800 universities from 104 countries in the five categories teaching, research, industry income, citations and international outlook.

Three of Baden-Württemberg’s nine research universities made it to the German top ten:

The University of Heidelberg ranks third (43rd world-wide), the University of Tübingen ranks fifth (86th world-wide) and the University of Freiburg ranks tenth (113th world-wide).

All three universities are among the oldest in Germany. They were founded in the 14th and 15th century and look back at a long tradition and a rich history.

Other universities from Baden-Württemberg were placed among the best ten percent internationally:

The University of Ulm performed especially well in the categories „citations“ and „industry income“. In the latter performance indicator, the University of Freiburg also earned many points.

Albeit not among the top ten percent, further research universities from THE LÄND showed their excellence and international competitiveness: The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is on place 189, the Universities of Hohenheim and Konstanz are in the ranking group 201-250.
