Universities and research institutes offering PhD programs
Doctorates are awarded by nine public research universities and six universities of education in Baden-Württemberg. Graduates of universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg can also obtain a doctorate in cooperation with a research university, for example by working in a research group at a Promotionskolleg. Since 2011, it has also been possible to study for the highest academic degree at the private Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen.
In addition to research universities and universities of applied sciences, you can also conduct high-level research projects at companies and non-university research institutes. Some internationally renowned institutes include Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Leibniz and Max Planck Institutes.
These institutes don’t have doctorate programs themselves but work closely with universities in Baden-Württemberg and around the world. They have established ways for young researchers to earn their doctorate degrees.
